The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Judges 11:29-39a

29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, "If Thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, 31 then it shall be that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering." 32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them, and the LORD delivered them into his hands. 33 And he smote them from Aroer even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house, and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes and said, "Alas, my daughter! Thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back." 36 And she said unto him, "My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon." 37 And she said unto her father, "Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows." 38 And he said, "Go." And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. 39 And it came to pass at the end of two months that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man.

Psalm 40:1-11

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
and He inclined unto me and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay,
and set my feet upon a rock and established my goings.
3 And He hath put a new song in my mouth; even praise unto our God;
many shall see it and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

4 Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust,
and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
5 Many, O LORD my God, are Thy wonderful works which Thou hast done;
and Thy thoughts which are directed toward us, they cannot be reckoned up in order unto Thee.
If I would declare and speak of them,
they are more than can be numbered.
6 Sacrifice and offering Thou didst not desire; mine ears hast Thou opened;
burnt offering and sin offering hast Thou not required.

7 Then said I, "Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me:
8 I delight to do Thy will, O my God; yea, Thy law is within my heart."
9 I have preached righteousness in the great congregation;
lo, I have not restrained my lips, O LORD, Thou knowest.
10 I have not hid Thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation;
I have not concealed Thy lovingkindness and Thy truth from the great congregation.

11 Withhold not Thou Thy tender mercies from me, O LORD;
let Thy lovingkindness and Thy truth continually preserve me.

Words of Worship - Psalm 95:8

"Harden not your heart as in the provocation,
and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness

Matthew 22:1-14

1 And Jesus answered and spoke unto them again in parables and said,

2 "The Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a certain king, who made a marriage for his son. 3 And he sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding, and they would not come. 4 Again he sent forth other servants, saying, 'Tell them that are bidden, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready. Come unto the marriage."' 5 But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise, 6 and the remnant took his servants and treated them spitefully and slew them. 7 But when the king heard thereof he was wroth, and he sent forth his armies and destroyed those murderers and burned up their city. 8 Then said he to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but they that were bidden were not worthy. 9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.' 10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered all together as many as they found, both bad and good, and the wedding was furnished with guests.

11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who did not have on a wedding garment. 12 And he said unto him, 'Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. 13 Then said the king to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14 For many are called, but few are chosen."

Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 12:10

but, executing Thy judgments upon them little by little, Thou gavest them room for repentance, not being ignorant that they were an evil generation, and that their malice was bred in them, and that their cogitation would never be changed.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 20:15b-16

Is thine eye evil, because I am good?' 16 So the last shall be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen."
