The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Ezekiel 43:1-9

1 Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east. 2 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east; and His voice was like a noise of many waters, and the earth shined with His glory. 3 And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city. And the visions were like the vision that I saw by the River Chebar; and I fell upon my face. 4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.

5 So the Spirit took me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. 6 And I heard Him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me. 7 And He said unto me, "Son of man, the place of My throne and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and My holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they nor their kings, by their whoredom nor by the carcasses of their kings in their high places. 8 In their setting of their threshold by My thresholds, and their post by My posts, and the wall between Me and them, they have even defiled My holy name by their abominations that they have committed. Therefore I have consumed them in Mine anger. 9 Now let them put away their whoredom and the carcasses of their kings far from Me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.

Psalm 85

1 LORD, Thou hast been favorable unto Thy land;
Thou hast released the captives of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of Thy people;
Thou hast covered all their sin.

3 Thou hast taken away all Thy wrath;
Thou hast turned Thyself from the fierceness of Thine anger.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation,
and cause Thine anger toward us to cease.
5 Wilt Thou be angry with us for ever?
Wilt Thou draw out Thine anger to all generations?
6 Wilt Thou not revive us again,
that Thy people may rejoice in Thee?
7 Show us Thy mercy, O LORD,
and grant us Thy salvation.

8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak,
for He will speak peace unto His people and to His saints; but let them not turn again to folly.
9 Surely His salvation is nigh them that fear Him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth are met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good,
and our land shall yield her increase.
13 Righteousness shall go before Him,
and shall set us in the way of His steps.

Words of Worship - Matthew 23:9b, 10b

One is your Father, who is in Heaven.
for One is your Master, even Christ.

Matthew 23:1-12

1 Then spoke Jesus to the multitude and to His disciples, 2 saying,

"The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do ye not according to their works; for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 and love the uppermost places at feasts and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.' 8 But be not ye called 'Rabbi,' for One is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

9 "And call no man your father upon earth, for One is your Father, who is in Heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters, for One is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased, and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

Words of Wisdom - isdom of Solomon 12:22

Therefore, whereas Thou dost chasten us, Thou scourgest our enemies a thousand times more, with the intent that, when we judge, we should carefully think of Thy goodness, and when we ourselves are judged, we should look for mercy.

And He said unto them,

"What man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will not lay hold on it and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days."
