The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

26 For ye see in your calling, brethren, how not many wise men according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 and base things of the world and things which are despised hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things which are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But because of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who from God is made unto us wisdom and righteousness, and sanctification and redemption, 31 that according as it is written:

"He that glorieth,
let him glory in the Lord."

Psalm 33:12-22

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.

13 The LORD looketh down from heaven;
He beholdeth all of the sons of men.
14 From the place of His habitation
He looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth;
15 He fashioneth the hearts of all;
He considereth all their works.

16 No king is saved by the multitude of an army;
a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
17 A horse is a vain thing for safety;
neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.
18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear Him,
upon them that hope in His mercy,
19 to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD;
He is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
because we have trusted in His holy name.
22 Let Thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us,
according as we hope in Thee.

Words of Worship - John 13:34

A new commandment I give unto you: that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Matthew 25:14-30

14 "For the Kingdom of Heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants and delivered unto them his goods. 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to every man according to his several ability, and straightway took his journey. 16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them another five talents. 17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained another two. 18 But he that had received one went and dug in the earth and hid his lord's money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and reckoned with them. 20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought the other five talents, saying, `Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents. Behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.' 21 His lord said unto him, `Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.'

22 "He also that had received two talents came and said, `Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents; behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.' 23 His lord said unto him, `Well done, good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.'

24 "Then he that had received the one talent came and said, `Lord, I knew thee, that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strewed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth. Lo, there thou hast what is thine.' 26 His lord answered and said unto him, `Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strewed. 27 Thou ought therefore to have placed my money with the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with interest. 28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath ten talents. 29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but from him that hath not, shall be taken away even that which he hath. 30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 13:10

But miserable are they, and in dead things is their hope, who called them gods which are the works of men's hands, gold and silver, artfully wrought, and resemblances of beasts or a stone good for nothing, the work of an ancient hand.

"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
