The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Ecclesiasticus 3:17-29

17 My son, go on with thy business in meekness;
so shalt thou be beloved by him that is approved.
18 The greater thou art, the more humble thyself,
and thou shalt find favor before the Lord.
19 Many are in high place and of renown,
but mysteries are revealed unto the meek.
20 For the power of the Lord is great,
and He is honored by the lowly.
21 Seek not out the things that are too hard for thee,
neither search the things that are above thy strength.
22 But what is commanded thee, think thereupon with reverence; f
or it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret.
23 Be not curious in unnecessary matters,
for more things are shown unto thee than men understand.
24 For many are deceived by their own vain opinion,
and an evil suspicion hath overthrown their judgment.
25 Without eyes thou shalt lack light;
profess not the knowledge therefore that thou hast not.
26 A stubborn heart shall fare evilly at the last,
and he that loveth danger shall perish therein.
27 An obstinate heart shall be laden with sorrows,
and the wicked man shall heap sin upon sin.
28 In the punishment of the proud there is no remedy,
for the plant of wickedness hath taken root in him.
29 The heart of the prudent will understand a parable,
and an attentive ear is the desire of a wise man.

Psalm 68:1-20

1 Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered;
let them also that hate Him flee before Him.
2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.
3 But let the righteous be glad, let them rejoice before God;
yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.

4 Sing unto God, sing praises to His name!
Extol Him that rideth upon the heavens by His name Jehovah; and rejoice before Him.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows,
is God in His holy habitation.
6 God setteth the solitary in families, He bringeth out those who are bound with chains;
but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
7 O God, when Thou wentest forth before Thy people,
when Thou didst march through the wilderness,
8 the earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God;
even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9 Thou, O God, didst send a plentiful rain,
whereby Thou didst confirm Thine inheritance when it was weary.
10 Thy congregation hath dwelt therein;
Thou, O God, hast prepared of Thy goodness for the poor.

11 The Lord gave the word;
great was the company of those that proclaimed it.
12 Kings and armies did flee apace,
and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.
13 Though ye have lain among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove,
covered with silver and her feathers with yellow gold.
14 When the Almighty scattered kings in it,
it was white as snow in Zalmon.

15 The hill of God is as the hill of Bashan,
a high hill as the hill of Bashan.
16 Why leap ye, ye high hills?
This is the hill which God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.

17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels;
the Lord is among them as in Sinai, in the holy place.
18 Thou hast ascended on high, Thou hast led captivity captive; Thou hast received gifts for men,
yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits,
even the God of our salvation.
20 He that is our God is the God of salvation;
and unto GOD the Lord belongeth the discharge from death.

Hebrews 12:18-27

18 For ye have not come unto the mount which might be touched and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest, 19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, which voice those who heard entreated that the Word should not be spoken to them any more. 20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, that: "if even so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through with a dart." 21 And so terrible was the sight that Moses said, "I fear exceedingly and quake.") 22 But ye have come unto Mount Zion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, who are written in Heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. 25 See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh, for if they escaped not who refused Him that spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him that speaketh from Heaven, 26 whose voice then shook the earth. But now He hath promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven." 27 And these words, "yet once more," signifieth the removing of those things which can be shaken, such as things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Words of Worship - Matthew 11:29

Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Luke 14:1-14

1 And it came to pass, as He went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, that they watched Him. 2 And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had the dropsy. 3 And Jesus answering, spoke unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying,

"Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day?"

4 But they held their peace. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. 5 And He answered them, saying,

"Which of you shall have an ox or an ass fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the Sabbath day?"

6 And again they could not answer Him concerning these things.

7 And He put forth a parable to those who were bidden, when He marked how they chose out the chief places, saying unto them,

8 "When thou art bidden by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest place, lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden by him, 9 and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, `Give this man thy place,' and thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place, that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, `Friend, go up higher.' Then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. 11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."

12 Then said He also to him who bade Him,

"When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen nor thy rich neighbors, lest they also bid thee again and a recompense be made to thee. 13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, 14 and thou shalt be blessed, for they cannot recompense thee. For thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 33:13

As the clay is in the potter's hand to fashion it at his pleasure,
so man is in the hand of Him that made him, to render to them as He liketh best.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 13:47-50

"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind, which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
