The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

1 Corinthians 2:1-9

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you declaring unto you the testimony of God, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not stand on the wisdom of man, but on the power of God.

6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are perfect, yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, who are coming to nought. 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the world for our glory -- 8 wisdom which none of the princes of this world knew; for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. 9 But as it is written:

"Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man
the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him."

Psalm 119:97-104

97 O how I love Thy law!
It is my meditation all the day.
98 Thou, through Thy commandments, hast made me wiser than mine enemies;
for Thy commands are ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for Thy testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the ancients,
because I keep Thy precepts.
101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way,
that I might keep Thy word.
102 I have not departed from Thy judgments,
for Thou hast taught me.
103 How sweet are Thy words unto my taste,
yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through Thy precepts I get understanding;
therefore I hate every false way.

Words of Worship - Luke 4:18a

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He hath anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor.

Luke 4:14-30

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and His fame went out through all the region round about. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

16 And He came to Nazareth where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. 17 And there was delivered unto Him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He hath anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor.
He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."

20 And He closed the book, and He gave it again to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of all those who were in the synagogue were fastened on Him. 21 And He began to say unto them,

"This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears."

22 And all bore Him witness and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?" 23 And He said unto them,

"Ye will surely say unto Me this proverb: `Physician, heal thyself! Whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.'"

24 And He said,

"Verily I say unto you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you in truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land. 26 But unto none of them was Elijah sent, save unto Zarephath, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian."

28 Then all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him unto the brow of a hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast Him down headlong. 30 But He, passing through the midst of them, went His way.

Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 14:12-14

For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication, and the invention of them the corruption of life. For neither were they from the beginning, neither shall they be for ever. For by the vainglory of men they entered into the world, and therefore shall they come shortly to an end.

And they were offended at Him. But Jesus said unto them,

"A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country and in his own house."
