The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

1 Thessalonians 5

1 But as to the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the Day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 3 For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction cometh upon them as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall not escape. 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 Ye are all the children of light and the children of the day; we are not of the night, nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunken are drunken in the night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ 10 who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. 11 Therefore comfort yourselves together and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, that you come to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. 15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man, but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves and with all men. 16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Test all things; hold fast to that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He that calleth you; He also will do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us. 26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Amen.

Psalm 27

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh,
they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army should encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war should rise against me,
even in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD;
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in His temple.
5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion;
in the secret places of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me upon a rock.
6 And then shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me;
therefore I will offer in His tabernacle sacrifices of joy;
I will sing,
yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.

7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me and answer me.
8 When Thou saidst, "Seek ye My face,"
my heart said unto Thee, "Thy face, LORD, will I seek."
9 Hide not Thy face far from me;
put not Thy servant away in anger.
Thou hast been my help; leave me not,
neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
10 When my father and my mother forsake me,
then the LORD will take me up.

11 Teach me Thy way, O LORD,
and lead me in a level path because of mine enemies.
12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies;
for false witnesses have risen up against me,
and such as breathe out cruelty.
13 I would have fainted,
unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
14 Wait on the LORD;
be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart.
Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Words of Worship - Luke 7:16b

"A great prophet is risen up among us"; and, "God hath visited His people."

Luke 4:31-37

31 And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days. 32 And they were astonished at His doctrine, for His word was with power. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man, who had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with Thee, Thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art Thou come to destroy us? I know Thee and who Thou art -- the Holy One of God!" 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying,

"Hold thy peace, and come out of him!"

And when the devil had thrown him in their midst, he came out of him and hurt him not. 36 And they were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, "What a word is this! For with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out." 37 And His fame went out into every place in the country round about.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 33:13

As the clay is in the potter's hand to fashion it at his pleasure,
so man is in the hand of Him that made him, to render to them as He liketh best.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Mark 3:27

No man can enter into a strong man's house and despoil his goods, unless he will first bind the strong man; and then he will despoil his house.
