The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Jeremiah 30:1-2,12-22

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2 "Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying: `Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.

12 "For thus saith the LORD: `Thy bruise is incurable,
and thy wound is grievous.
13 There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up;
thou hast no healing medicines.
14 All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not;
for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy,
with the chastisement of a cruel one for the multitude of thine iniquity, because thy sins were increased.
15 Why criest thou for thine affliction?
Thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity;
because thy sins were increased,
I have done these things unto thee.
16 Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured,
and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity;
and they that despoil thee shall be a spoil,
and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey.
17 For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds,' saith the LORD,
`because they called thee an outcast, saying, "This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after."'

18 "Thus saith the LORD: `Behold, I will bring back from captivity Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwelling places;
and the city shall be built upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof.
19 And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry;
and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
20 Their children also shall be as in former time, and their congregation shall be established before Me,
and I will punish all that oppress them.
21 And their nobles shall be of themselves,
and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them;
and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto Me;
for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto Me?' saith the LORD.
22 `And ye shall be My people,
and I will be your God.'"

Psalm 102

1 Hear my prayer, O LORD,
and let my cry come unto Thee.
2 Hide not Thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble;
incline Thine ear unto me. In the day when I call,
answer me speedily.
3 For my days are consumed like smoke,
and my bones are burned as a hearth.
4 My heart is smitten and withered like grass,
so that I forget to eat my bread.
5 By reason of the voice of my groaning
my bones cleave to my skin.
6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness;
I am like an owl of the desert.
7 I watch, and am as a sparrow
alone upon the housetop.
8 Mine enemies reproach me all the day,
and them that are mad against me are sworn against me.
9 For I have eaten ashes like bread
and mingled my drink with weeping,
10 because of Thine indignation and Thy wrath;
for Thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down.
11 My days are like a shadow that declineth,
and I am withered like grass.

12 But Thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever,
and Thy remembrance unto all generations.
13 Thou shalt arise and have mercy upon Zion;
for the time to favor her, yea, the set time has come.
14 For Thy servants take pleasure in her stones,
and favor the dust thereof.
15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD,
and all the kings of the earth Thy glory.
16 When the LORD shall build up Zion,
He shall appear in His glory.
17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute,
and not despise their prayer.

18 This shall be written for the generation to come,
and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
19 For He hath looked down from the height of His sanctuary;
from heaven did the LORD behold the earth,
20 to hear the groaning of the prisoner,
to loose those that are appointed to death,
21 to declare the name of the LORD in Zion,
and His praise in Jerusalem,
22 when people are gathered together,
and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.

23 He weakened my strength on the way;
He shortened my days.
24 I said, "O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days;
Thy years are throughout all generations.
25 Of old hast Thou laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of Thy hands.
26 They shall perish, but Thou shalt endure;
yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment;
and as a vesture shalt Thou change them,
and they shall be changed.
27 But Thou art the same,
and Thy years shall have no end.
28 The children of Thy servants shall continue,
and their seed shall be established before Thee."

Words of Worship - John 1:49b

"Rabbi, Thou art the Son of God; Thou art the King of Israel."

Matthew 15:1-2, 13-14

1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, who were from Jerusalem, saying, 2 "Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread." 13 But He answered and said,

"Every plant which My heavenly Father hath not planted shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 31:23-24

Whoso is liberal with his meat, men shall speak well of him;
and the report of his good housekeeping will be believed.
But against him that is a niggard with his meat the whole city shall murmur,
and the testimonies of his niggardliness shall not be doubted.

And every one that heareth these sayings of Mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell, and great was the fall of it."
