The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Numbers 20:1-13

1 Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the Desert of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh. And Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 And there was no water for the congregation, and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. 3 And the people chided Moses and spoke, saying, "Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD! 4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there? 5 And why have ye made us to come up out of Egypt to bring us in unto this evil place? It is no place of seed or of figs or of vines or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink." 6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, 8 "Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink." 9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He commanded him.

10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them: "Hear now, ye rebels! Must we fetch you water out of this rock?" 11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice; and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. 12 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron: "Because ye believed Me not, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them." 13 This is the water of Meribah [that is, Strife], because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and He was sanctified in them.

Psalm 95

1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD!
Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving,
and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.
3 For the LORD is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
4 In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
the strength of the hills is His also.
5 The sea is His, and He made it;
and His hands formed the dry land.

6 O come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
7 For He is our God,
and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.

Today, if ye will hear His voice:
8 "Harden not your heart as in the provocation,
and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness
9 when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me,
and saw My work.
10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation,
and said `It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known My ways.'
11 Unto them I swore in My wrath,
that they should not enter into My rest."

Words of Worship - Matthew 16:18

And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:13-23

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying,

"Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"

14 And they said, "Some say that Thou art John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15 He said unto them,

"But who say ye that I am?"

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him,

"Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father who is in Heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven."

20 Then He charged His disciples that they should tell no man that He was Jesus the Christ.

21 From that time forth began Jesus to show unto His disciples that He must go unto Jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Be it far from Thee, Lord; this shall not happen unto Thee." 23 But He turned and said unto Peter,

"Get thee behind Me, Satan! Thou art an offense unto Me; for thou savorest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men."

Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 9:1-4

"O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy,
who hast made all things with Thy word,
and ordained man through Thy wisdom,
that he should have dominion over the creatures which Thou hast made,
and order the world according to equity and righteousness,
and execute judgment with an upright heart,
give me wisdom that sitteth by Thy throne,
and reject me not from among Thy children.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 13:44

"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field, which, when a man hath found, he hideth; and for the joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
