The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
Nahum 2:1-4
1 He that dasheth in pieces has come up before thy
face.
Man the defenses! Watch the way!
Make thy loins strong! Fortify thy power mightily!
2 For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the
excellency of Israel;
for the emptiers have emptied them out and marred their vine
branches.
3 The shield of his mighty men is made red,
the valiant men are in scarlet;
the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his
preparation,
and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.
4 The chariots shall rage in the streets,
they shall jostle one against another in the broad ways;
they shall seem like torches,
they shall run like the lightning.
Nahum 3:1-7
1 Woe to the bloody city!
It is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not.
2 The noise of a whip and the noise of the rattling of the
wheels,
and of the prancing horses and of the jumping chariots!
3 The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering
spear,
and there is a multitude of slain and a great number of carcasses.
And there is no end of their corpses--
they stumble upon their corpses--
4 because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavored
harlot,
the mistress of witchcraft, that selleth nations through her whoredom,
and families through her witchcraft.
5 "Behold, I am against thee," saith the LORD of hosts,
"and I will uncover thy skirts upon thy face;
and I will show the nations thy nakedness and the kingdoms thy
shame.
6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee and make thee
vile,
and will set thee as a gazingstock.
7 And it shall come to pass that all they that look upon thee shall
flee from thee and say, `Nineveh is laid waste! Who will bemoan
her?'
From whence shall I seek comforters for thee?"
Deuteronomy 32:34-41
34 "`Is not this laid up in store with Me,
and sealed up among My treasures?
35 To Me belongeth vengeance and recompense;
their foot shall slide in due time;
for the day of their calamity is at hand,
and the things that shall come upon them make haste.'
36 "For the LORD shall judge His people and repent for
His servants,
when He seeth that their power is gone and there is none shut up or
left.
37 And He shall say: 'Where are their gods,
their rock in whom they trusted,
38 which ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of
their drink offerings?
Let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.
39 "`See now that I, even I, am He,
and there is no god besides Me.
I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal;
neither is there any that can deliver out of My hand.
40 For I lift up My hand to heaven and say:
I live for ever.
41 If I whet My glittering sword and Mine hand take hold on
judgment,
I will render vengeance to Mine enemies and will reward them that
hate Me.
Words of Worship - Matthew 5:10
Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 16:24-28
24 Then Jesus said unto His
disciples, "If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take
up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it,
and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it. 26 For what is a
man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what
shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man shall come in
the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He shall reward every man
according to his works. 28 Verily I say unto you, there are some standing here
who shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in His
Kingdom."
Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 31:27
Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately.
What life is then to a man that is without wine? For it was made to make men
glad.

Then said He unto His disciples,
"The harvest truly is plenteous, but the
laborers are few.
