The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Ecclesiasticus 48:1-11

1 Then stood up Elijah the prophet as fire, and his word burned like a lamp.
2 He brought a sore famine upon them, and by his zeal he diminished their number.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and also three times brought down fire.
4 O Elijah, how wast thou honored in thy wondrous deeds! And who may glory like unto thee!--
5 who didst raise up a dead man from death,
and his soul from the place of the dead, by the word of the Most High;
6 who broughtest kings to destruction,
and honorable men from their bed;
7 who heardest the rebuke of the Lord in Sinai,
and in Horeb the judgment of vengeance;
8 who annointedst kings to take revenge,
and prophets to succeed after him;
9 who was taken up in a whirlwind of fire,
and in a chariot of fiery horses;
10 who wast ordained for reproofs in their times,
to pacify the wrath of the Lord's judgment, before it broke forth into fury,
and to turn the heart of the father unto the son,
and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
11 Blessed are they that saw thee, and slept in love;
for we shall surely live.

Psalm 80

1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, Thou that leadest Joseph like a flock;
Thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.
2 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh,
stir up Thy strength, and come and save us.

3 Turn us again, O God, and cause Thy face to shine,
and we shall be saved.

4 O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt Thou be angry against the prayer of Thy people?
5 Thou feedest them with the bread of tears, and givest them tears to drink in great measure.
6 Thou makest us a strife unto our neighbors,
and our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause Thy face to shine,
and we shall be saved.

8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt;
Thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.
9 Thou preparedst room for it, and didst cause it to take deep root,
and it filled the land.
10 The hills were covered with the shadow of it,
and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars.
11 She sent out her boughs unto the sea,
and her branches unto the river.

12 Why hast Thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they that pass by the way do pluck her?
13 The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of the field doth devour it.
14 Return, we beseech Thee, O God of hosts; look down from heaven,
and behold and visit this vine,
15 and the vineyard which Thy right hand hath planted,
and the branch that Thou madest strong for Thyself.
16 It is burned with fire, it is cut down;
they perish at the rebuke of Thy countenance.
17 Let Thy hand be upon the man of Thy right hand,
upon the son of man whom Thou madest strong for Thyself.
18 So will we not go back from Thee;
quicken us, and we will call upon Thy name.
19 Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts;
cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved!

Words of Worship - Luke 3:4c, 6

`Prepare ye the way of the Lord,
make His paths straight.

and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"

Matthew 17:10-13

10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come?" 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them,

"Elijah truly shall first come and restore all things. 12 But I say unto you that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they pleased. Likewise shall also the Son of Man suffer by them."

13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 1:21

The fear of the Lord driveth away sins;
and where it is present, it turneth away wrath.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 5:21-22

"Ye have heard that it was said by them of old, `Thou shalt not kill,' and `Whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.' But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, `Raca,' shall be in danger of the council; but whosoever shall say, `Thou fool,' shall be in danger of hell fire.
