The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Malachi 3

1 "Behold, I will send My messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me. And the LORD, whom you seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in. Behold, He shall come," saith the LORD of hosts.

2 "But who may abide the day of His coming? And who shall stand when He appeareth? For He is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap. And He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. 4 Then shall the offering of Judah and of Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old and as in former years.

5 "And I will come near to you in judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers, and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, and those who turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not Me," saith the LORD of hosts. 6 "For I am the LORD, I change not. Therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

7 "Even from the days of your fathers, ye have gone away from Mine ordinances and have not kept them. Return unto Me, and I will return unto you," saith the LORD of hosts. "But ye said, `In what manner shall we return?' 8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me! But ye say, `Wherein have we robbed Thee?' In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house, and put Me to the proof now herewith," saith the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open to you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field," saith the LORD of hosts. 12 "And all nations shall call you blessed, for ye shall be a delightsome land," saith the LORD of hosts.

13 "Your words have been defiant against Me," saith the LORD. "Yet ye say, `What have we spoken so much against Thee?' 14 Ye have said: `It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? 15 So now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.'"

16 Then those who feared the LORD spoke often one to another, and the LORD hearkened and heard it. And a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who feared the LORD and who thought upon His name. 17 "And they shall be Mine," saith the LORD of hosts, "in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son who serveth him. 18 Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not.

Malachi 4

1 "For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly shall be stubble. And the day that cometh shall burn them up," saith the LORD of hosts, "that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings; and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves from the stall. 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this," saith the LORD of hosts.

4 "Remember ye the Law of Moses, My servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

5 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."

Psalm 25

1 Unto Thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul;
2 O my God, I trust in Thee.
Let me not be ashamed;
let not mine enemies triumph over me.
3 Yea, let none that wait on Thee be ashamed;
let them be ashamed that transgress without cause.

4 Show me Thy ways, O LORD;
teach me Thy paths.
5 Lead me in Thy truth and teach me,
for Thou art the God of my salvation;
on Thee do I wait all the day.

6 Remember, O LORD, Thy tender mercies and Thy lovingkindnesses;
for they have been ever of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions;
according to Thy mercy remember Thou me,
for Thy goodness' sake, O LORD.

8 Good and upright is the LORD;
therefore will He teach sinners in the way.
9 The meek will He guide in judgment,
and the meek will He teach His way.
10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth,
unto them that keep His covenant and His testimonies.

11 For Thy name's sake, O LORD,
pardon mine iniquity, for it is great.
12 What man is he that feareth the LORD?
Him shall He teach in the way that He shall choose.
13 His soul shall dwell at ease,
and his seed shall inherit the earth.
14 The secret of the LORD is with them that fear Him,
and He will show them His covenant.
15 Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD,
for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn Thee unto me and have mercy upon me,
for I am desolate and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged;
O bring Thou me out of my distresses.
18 Look upon mine affliction and my pain,
and forgive all my sins.
19 Consider mine enemies, for they are many;
they hate me with cruel hatred.
20 O keep my soul and deliver me;
let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in Thee.
21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
for I wait on Thee.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
out of all his troubles!

Luke 1:57-66

57 Now Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered, and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbors and her kindred heard how the Lord had shown great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60 But his mother answered and said, "Not so, but he shall be called John." 61 And they said unto her, "There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name." 62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, saying, "His name is John." And they marveled all. 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spoke and praised God. 65 And fear came on all who dwelt round about them; and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66 And all those who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What manner of child shall this be?" And the hand of the Lord was with him.

Words of Wisdom - 2 Samuel 22:29-31

For Thou Art my lamp, O LORD;
and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
For by Thee I have run through a troop;
by my God have I leaped over a wall.

"As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried;
He is buckler to all them that trust in Him.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:3-4

But when thou givest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth, that thine almsgiving may be in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret, Himself shall reward thee openly.
