The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

1 John 1:5-10

5 This then is the message which we have heard from Him and declare unto you: that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.

1 John 2:1-6

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

3 And hereby we know that we know Him: if we keep His commandments. 4 He that saith, "I know Him," and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth His Word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him. 6 He that saith that he abideth in Him, ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.

Psalm 124

1 "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side"--now may Israel say--
2 "if it had not been the LORD who was on our side when men rose up against us,
3 then would they have swallowed us up alive when their wrath was kindled against us;
4 then would the waters have overwhelmed us,
the stream would have gone over our soul;
5 then the proud waters would have gone over our soul."

6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

Matthew 2:13-18

13 And when they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, and take the young Child and His mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him." 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed into Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt have I called My Son."

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth and slew all the children who were in Bethlehem and in all the region thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 "In Ramah was there a voice heard,
lamentation and weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children and would not be comforted,
because they are no more."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 2:17-18

They that fear the Lord will prepare their hearts,
and humble their souls in His sight,
saying, "We will fall into the hands of the Lord, and not into the hands of men";
for as His majesty is, so is His mercy.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:1-2

"Take heed that ye do not your almsgiving before men, to be seen by them; otherwise ye have no reward from your Father who is in Heaven. Therefore when thou givest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.
