The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons
1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, "Fear not, Abram. I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward." 2 And Abram said, "Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me, seeing I go childless and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?" 3 And Abram said, "Behold, to me Thou hast given no seed; and lo, one born in my house is mine heir." 4 And behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, "This shall not be thine heir, but he that shall come forth out of thine own loins shall be thine heir." 5 And He brought him forth outdoors and said, "Look now toward heaven and count the stars, if thou be able to number them." And He said unto him, "So shall thy seed be." 6 And he believed in the LORD; and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
1 And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had spoken. 2 For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and by it he, being dead, yet speaketh.
5 By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death, "and was not found because God had translated him." For before his translation he had this testimony: that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him. For he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God of things not yet seen, moved with fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should later receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11 Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore there sprang even from one, and him as good as dead, as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded by them and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they are seeking a fatherland. 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He hath prepared for them a City.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac; and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 of whom it was said, "In Isaac shall thy seed be called," 19 accounting that God was able to raise him up even from the dead, from whence he also received him, in a figurative sense.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the Child, His name was called JESUS, who was so named by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
22 And when the days of her purification according to the Law of Moses were accomplished, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord: "Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord: "A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."
25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him after the custom of the law, 28 then he took Him up in his arms, and blessed God and said,
33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said unto Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against 35 (yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher. She was of great age and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, 37 and she was a widow of about fourscore and four years. She departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she, coming in that instant, gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee to their own city, Nazareth. 40 And the Child grew and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him.
