The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
1 Kings 12:25-33
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in Mount
Ephraim and dwelt therein, and went out from thence and
built Penuel. 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart,
"Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David.
27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of
the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this
people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam
king of Judah, and they shall kill me and go again to
Rehoboam king of Judah." 28 Whereupon the king took
counsel and made two calves of gold, and said unto them,
"It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem.
Behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of
the land of Egypt!" 29 And he set the one in Bethel,
and the other put he in Dan. 30 And this thing became a
sin, for the people went to worship before the one, even
unto Dan. 31 And he made a house of high places, and made
priests of the lowest of the people, who were not of the
sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the
eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like
unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the
altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves
that he had made; and he placed in Bethel the priests of
the high places which he had made. 33 So he offered upon
the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day
of the eighth month, even in the month which he had
devised of his own heart, and ordained a feast unto the
children of Israel; and he offered upon the altar and
burned incense.
1 Kings 13:33-34
33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from the lowest of the people priests for the high places; whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
Psalm 106:24-48
24 Yea, they despised the pleasant land; they believed not
His word,
25 but murmured in their tents and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.
26 Therefore He lifted up His hand against them to overthrow them in the
wilderness,
27 to overthrow their seed also among the nations and to scatter them in the
lands.
28 They joined themselves also with Baal of Peor,
and ate the sacrifices to the dead.
29 Thus they provoked Him to anger with their inventions,
and the plague broke in upon them.
30 Then stood up Phinehas and executed judgment, and so the plague was
stayed.
31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for
evermore.
32 They angered Him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with
Moses for their sakes,
33 because they provoked his spirit, so that he spoke unadvisedly with his
lips.
34 They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the
LORD commanded them;
35 but they mingled among the heathen and learned their works,
36 and they served their idols,
which were a snare unto them.
37 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and daughters unto devils,
38 and shed innocent blood,
even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed
unto the idols of Canaan;
and the land was polluted with blood.
39 Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with
their own schemes.
40 Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against His people,
insomuch that He abhorred His own inheritance.
41 And He gave them into the hand of the heathen,
and they that hated them ruled over them.
42 Their enemies also oppressed them,
and they were brought into subjection under their hand.
43 Many times did He deliver them,
but they provoked Him with their counsel, and were brought low for their
iniquity.
44 Nevertheless He regarded their affliction when He heard their cry,
45 and He remembered for them His covenant, and repented according to the
multitude of His mercies.
46 He made them also to be pitied
by all those that carried them captive.
47 Save us, O LORD our God, and gather us from among the
heathen,
to give thanks unto Thy holy name, and to triumph in Thy praise.
48 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to
everlasting, and let all the people say, "Amen."
Praise ye the LORD!
Words of Worship - Matthew 4:4b
'Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of
God.'"
Mark 8:1-10
1 In those days, the multitude being very great and having
nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples unto Him and said unto them,
2 "I have compassion on the
multitude, because they have now been with Me three days and have nothing to
eat. 3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by
the way; for divers of them came from afar."
4 And His disciples answered Him, "From whence can a man
satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?" 5 And He asked them,
"How many loaves have ye?"
And they said, "Seven." 6 And He commanded the
people to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks
and broke, and gave to His disciples to set before them; and they set them
before the people. 7 And they had a few small fishes, and He blessed them and
commanded to set them also before them. 8 So they ate and were filled; and they
took up of the broken meat that was left, seven baskets. 9 And those who had
eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away.
10 And straightway He entered into a boat with His disciples and
came into the region of Dalmanutha.

If they have called
the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call
them of his household! Fear them not therefore, for there is nothing
covered that shall not be revealed, and hid that shall not be known.
What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light; and what ye
hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
