The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Ecclesiasticus 15:15-20

15 if thou wilt keep the commandments,
and perform acceptable faithfulness.

16
He hath set fire and water before thee:
stretch forth thy hand unto whichever thou wilt.

17
Before man is life and death;
and whichever he liketh shall be given him.

18
For the wisdom of the Lord is great,
and He is mighty in power and beholdeth all things;

19
and His eyes are upon them that fear Him,
and He knoweth every work of man.

20
He hath commanded no man to do wickedly,
neither hath He given any man license to sin.

Psalm 119:1-34

1 Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
who walk in the law of the LORD.
2 Blessed are they that keep His testimonies
and that seek Him with the whole heart.
3 They also do no iniquity;
they walk in His ways.
4 Thou hast commanded us to keep Thy precepts diligently;
5 O that my ways were directed to keep Thy statutes!
6 Then shall I not be ashamed
when I have respect unto all Thy commandments.
7 I will praise Thee with uprightness of heart
when I shall have learned Thy righteous judgments.
8 I will keep Thy statutes;
O forsake me not utterly!

9 How shall a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed thereto according to Thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought Thee;
O let me not wander from Thy commandments!
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart,
that I might not sin against Thee.
12 Blessed art Thou, O LORD;
teach me Thy statutes.
13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of Thy mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Thy precepts
and attend unto Thy ways.
16 I will delight myself in Thy statutes;
I will not forget Thy word.

17 Deal bountifully with Thy servant,
that I may live and keep Thy word.
18 Open Thou mine eyes,
that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law.
19 I am a stranger on the earth;
hide not Thy commandments from me.
20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath for Thy judgments at all times.
21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, that err from Thy commandments.
22 Remove from me reproach and contempt,
for I have kept Thy testimonies.
23 Princes also sat and spoke against me, but Thy servant meditated on Thy statutes.
24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.

25 My soul cleaveth unto the dust;
quicken Thou me according to Thy word.
26 I have declared my ways, and Thou heardest me;
teach me Thy statutes.
27 Make me to understand the way of Thy precepts;
so shall I talk of Thy wondrous works.
28 My soul melteth from heaviness;
strengthen Thou me according to Thy word.
29 Remove from me the way of lying,
and grant me Thy law graciously.
30 I have chosen the way of truth;
Thy judgments have I laid before me.
31 I have held fast unto Thy testimonies;
O LORD, put me not to shame.
32 I will run in the way of Thy commandments,
when Thou shalt enlarge my heart.

33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of Thy statutes,
and I shall keep it unto the end.
34 Give me understanding and I shall keep Thy law;
yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

1 Corinthians 2:6-10

6 However, we speak wisdom among those who are perfect, yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, who are coming to nought. 7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the world for our glory -- 8 wisdom which none of the princes of this world knew; for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of Glory. 9 But as it is written:

"Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man
the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him."

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Words of Worship - Matthew 11:25

At that time Jesus answered and said,

"I thank Thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

Matthew 5:17-37

"Think not that I am come to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. 18 For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall in any wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 For I say unto you that unless your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old, `Thou shalt not kill,' and `Whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.' 22 But I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, `Raca,' shall be in danger of the council; but whosoever shall say, `Thou fool,' shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, 24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way. First be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

25 "Agree with thine adversary quickly while thou art on the way with him, lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence until thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old, `Thou shalt not commit adultery.' 28 But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if thy right eye cause thee to fall, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30 And if thy right hand cause thee to fall, cut it off and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

31 "It hath been said, `Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement.' 32 But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

33 "Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old times, `Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths.' 34 But I say unto you, swear not at all: neither by Heaven, for it is God's throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; neither by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be `yea, yea' or `nay, nay'; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 3:22

Therefore I perceived that there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his portion; for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 20:1-15a

"For the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said unto them, 'Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you.' And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said unto them, 'Why stand ye here all the day idle?' They said unto him, 'Because no man hath hired us.' He said unto them, 'Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.'

So when evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said unto his steward, 'Call the laborers and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.' And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the master of the house, saying, 'These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.' But he answered one of them and said, 'Friend, I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a penny? Take that which is thine and go thy way. I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own?
