The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
Ecclesiasticus 47:1-11
1 And after him rose up Nathan to prophesy in the time of
David.
2 As is the fat taken away from the peace offering, so was David
chosen out of the children of Israel.
3 He played with lions as with kids,
and with bears as with lambs.
4 Slew he not a giant, when he was yet but young?
And did he not take away reproach from the people, when he lifted up his
hand with the stone in the sling, and beat down the boasting of
Goliath?
5 For he called upon the Most High Lord; and He gave him strength
in his right hand to slay that mighty warrior,
and set up the horn of His people.
6 So the people honored him with ten thousands, and praised him in
the blessings of the Lord,
in that He gave him a crown of glory.
7 For he destroyed the enemies on every side, and brought to nought
the Philistines his adversaries,
and broke their horn asunder unto this day.
8 In all his works he praised the Holy One Most High with words of
glory;
with his whole heart he sang songs, and loved Him that made him.
9 He set singers also before the altar, that by their voices they
might make sweet melody,
and daily sing praises in their songs.
10 He beautified their feasts, and set in order the solemn times
until the end,
that they might praise His holy name, and that the temple might sound
from morning.
11 The Lord took away his sins, and exalted his horn for
ever;
He gave him a covenant of kings, and a throne of glory in Israel.
Psalm 18:31-50
31 For who is God, except the LORD?
Or who is a rock, except our God?
32 It is God that girdeth me with strength,
and maketh my way perfect.
33 He maketh my feet like hinds' feet,
and setteth me upon my high places.
34 He teacheth my hands to war,
so that the bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
35 Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation;
Thy right hand hath held me up, and Thy gentleness hath made me
great.
36 Thou hast enlarged my path under me,
that my feet did not slip.
37 I have pursued mine enemies and overtaken them;
neither did I turn back until they were consumed.
38 I have wounded them, that they were not able to rise;
they have fallen under my feet.
39 For Thou hast girded me with strength for the battle;
Thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.
40 Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies,
that I might destroy them that hate me.
41 They cried, but there was none to save them,
even unto the LORD, but He answered them not.
42 Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind;
I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.
43 Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and Thou
hast made me the head of the heathen;
a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
44 As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me;
the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.
45 The strangers shall fade away,
and be afraid out of their close places.
46 The LORD liveth, and blessed be my Rock! And let
the God of my salvation be exalted!
47 It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me;
48 He delivereth me from mine enemies. Yea, Thou liftest me up above
those that rise up against me;
Thou hast delivered me from violent men.
49 Therefore will I give thanks unto Thee, O LORD, among the
heathen,
and sing praises unto Thy name.
50 Great deliverance giveth He to His king and
showeth mercy to His anointed,
to David and to his seed for evermore.
Words of Worship - Luke
8:15
But that on the good ground are they that, in an honest and good heart, having
heard the Word, keep it and bring forth fruit with patience.
Mark 6:14-29
14 And King Herod heard of Him, for His name was spread abroad. And he said,
"John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and therefore these mighty works
show forth themselves in him." 15 Others said, "It is Elijah,"
and others said, "It is a prophet, or like one of the prophets." 16
But when Herod heard of it, he said, "It is John, whom I beheaded; he is
risen from the dead." 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold
upon John, and had bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother
Philip's wife; for he had married her. 18 For John had said unto Herod, "It
is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife." 19 Therefore Herodias
had an inward grudge against him and would have killed him, but she could not;
20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and holy, and kept him
safe. And when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. 21 And
when a convenient day had come, when Herod on his birthday gave a supper for his
lords, high officers, and chief officials of Galilee, 22 and when the daughter
of the said Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat
with him, the king said unto the damsel, "Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt,
and I will give it to thee." 23 And he swore unto her, "Whatsoever
thou shalt ask of me, I will give it to thee, unto the half of my kingdom."
24 And she went forth and said unto her mother, "What shall I ask?"
And Herodias said, "The head of John the Baptist." 25 And she came
back straightway with haste unto the king and asked, saying, "I will that
thou give me at once on a charger the head of John the Baptist." 26 And the
king was exceedingly sorry, yet for his oath's sake and for their sakes who sat
with him, he would not reject her. 27 And immediately the king sent an
executioner and commanded John's head to be brought. And he went and beheaded
him in prison, 28 and brought his head on a charger and gave it to the damsel;
and the damsel gave it to her mother. 29 And when John's disciples heard of it,
they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 3:9-13
What profit hath he that worketh in that for which he laboreth? I have seen
the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. He
hath made every thing beautiful in his time. Also He hath set the world in their
heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning
to the end. I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice and
to do good in his life, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy
the good of all his labor: it is the gift of God.
