The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Amos 3:1-8

1 Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,

2 "You only have I known of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities."

3 Can two walk together,
unless they be agreed?
4 Will a lion roar in the forest when he hath no prey?
Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth where no trap is for him?
Shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid?
Shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing,
unless He revealeth His secret unto His servants the prophets.
8 The lion hath roared! Who will not fear?
The Lord GOD hath spoken! Who can but prophesy?

Amos 4:7-13

7 "And also I have withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest;
and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city.
One piece was rained upon,
and the piece upon which it rained not withered.
8 So two or three cities wandered unto one city to drink water, but they were not satisfied;
yet have ye not returned unto Me," saith the LORD.

9 "I have smitten you with blight and mildew;
when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased,
the palmer worm devoured them;
yet have ye not returned unto Me," saith the LORD.
10 "I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt;
your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses;
and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils;
yet have ye not returned unto Me," saith the LORD.
11 "I have overthrown some of you,
as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning;
yet have ye not returned unto Me," saith the LORD.
12 "Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel;
and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel!"

13 For lo, He that formeth the mountains and createth the wind,
and declareth unto man what is His thought,
that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth--
the LORD, the God of Hosts, is His name.

Psalm 5

1 Give ear to my words, O LORD;
consider my meditation.
2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King and my God,
for unto Thee will I pray.
3 My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning, O LORD;
in the morning will I direct my prayer unto Thee and will look up.

4 For Thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness;
neither shall evil dwell with Thee.
5 The foolish shall not stand in Thy sight;
Thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies;
the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

7 But as for me, I will come into Thy house in the multitude of Thy mercy,
and in Thy fear will I worship toward Thy holy temple.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in Thy righteousness because of mine enemies;
make Thy way straight before my face.
9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth;
their inward part is exceeding wickedness.
Their throat is an open sepulcher;
they flatter with their tongue.
10 Destroy Thou them, O God!
Let them fall by their own counsels.
Cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions,
for they have rebelled against Thee.

11 But let all those that put their trust in Thee rejoice;
let them ever shout for joy,
because Thou defendest them;
let them also that love Thy name be joyful in Thee.
12 For Thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous;
with favor wilt Thou compass him about as with a shield.

Words of Worship - Psalm 130:5

 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait,
and in His word do I hope.

Matthew 8:23-27

23 And when He had entered into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose a great tempest on the sea, insomuch that the boat was covered with the waves; but He was asleep. 25 And His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, "Lord, save us! We perish!" 26 And He said unto them,

"Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?"

Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marveled, saying, "What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?"

Words of Wisdom - Ezekiel 45:9

"'Thus saith the Lord GOD: Let it suffice you, O princes of Israel. Remove violence and spoil, and execute judgment and justice. Take away your exactions from My people, saith the Lord GOD.

"Ye have heard that it was said by them of old, `Thou shalt not commit adultery.' But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
