The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Exodus 1

1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 And all the souls who came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls, for Joseph was in Egypt already. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. 9 And he said unto his people, "Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. 10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply and it come to pass, when there befalleth any war, that they join also unto our enemies and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land." 11 Therefore they set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew; and they were grieved because of the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar and in brick and in all manner of service in the field; all their service wherein they made them serve was with rigor.

15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah. 16 And he said, "When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women and see them upon the birthstools, if it be a son then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter then she shall live." 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. 18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said unto them, "Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?" 19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them." 20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and waxed very mighty. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that He made them houses.

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, "Every son who is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive."

Psalm 124

1 "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side"--now may Israel say--
2 "if it had not been the LORD who was on our side when men rose up against us,
3 then would they have swallowed us up alive when their wrath was kindled against us;
4 then would the waters have overwhelmed us,
the stream would have gone over our soul;
5 then the proud waters would have gone over our soul."

6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

Words of Worship - Matthew 5:10

Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 10:32-42

32 "Whosoever therefore shall confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father who is in Heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father who is in Heaven.

34 "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth. I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to `set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.' 36 And `a man's foes shall be they of his own household.' 37 He that loveth father or mother more than Me, is not worthy of Me. And he that loveth son or daughter more than Me, is not worthy of Me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me. 39 He that findeth his life, shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for My sake, shall find it.

40 "He that receiveth you, receiveth Me; and he that receiveth Me, receiveth Him that sent Me. 41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward. And he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward."

Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 4:1

Better it is to have no children, and to have virtue;
for the memorial thereof is immortal, because it is approved with God and with men.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 7:6

"Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
