The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Exodus 16:1-15

1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the children of Israel said unto them, "Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and when we ate bread to the full! For ye have brought us forth into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may put them to the proof, whether they will walk in My law, or no. 5 And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily." 6 And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, "At evening, then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt; 7 and in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD, for He heareth your murmurings against the LORD. And what are we, that ye murmur against us?" 8 And Moses said, "This shall be when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat and in the morning bread to the full, for the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against Him. And what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD."

9 And Moses spoke unto Aaron, "Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, `Come near before the LORD, for He hath heard your murmurings.'" 10 And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying, 12 "I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak unto them, saying, `At evening ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.'"

13 And it came to pass that at evening the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay round about the host. 14 And when the dew that lay had gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoarfrost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "What is this?" For they knew not what it was. And Moses said unto them, "This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.

Psalm 78:17-39

17 And they sinned yet more against Him
by provoking the Most High in the wilderness.
18 And they tempted God in their heart
by asking for meat for their lust.
19 Yea, they spoke against God:
they said, "Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed.
Can He give bread also? Can He provide flesh for His people?"
21 Therefore the LORD heard this and was wroth;
so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also rose up against Israel,
22 because they believed not in God
and trusted not in His salvation,
23 though He had commanded the clouds from above,
and opened the doors of heaven,
24 and had rained down manna upon them to eat,
and had given them of the corn of heaven.
25 Man ate angels' food;
He sent them meat to the full.
26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven,
and by His power He brought in the south wind.
27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust,
and feathered fowls as the sand of the sea.
28 And He let it fall in the midst of their camp,
round about their habitations.
29 So they ate and were well filled,
for He gave them their own desire.
30 But they were not estranged from their lust;
but while their meat was yet in their mouths,
31 the wrath of God came upon them and slew the fattest of them,
and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

32 For all this, they sinned still
and believed not in His wondrous works.
33 Therefore their days did He consume in vanity,
and their years in trouble.
34 When He slew them, then they sought Him;
and they returned and inquired early after God.
35 And they remembered that God was their rock,
and the high God, their redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth,
and they lied unto Him with their tongues.
37 For their heart was not right with Him,
neither were they steadfast in His covenant.
38 But He, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity
and destroyed them not.
Yea, many a time turned He His anger away,
and did not stir up all His wrath;
39 for He remembered that they were but flesh,
a wind that passeth away and cometh not again.

Matthew 13:1-9

1 The same day, Jesus went out of the house and sat by the seaside. 2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto Him, so that He went into a boat and sat, and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3 And He spoke many things unto them in parables, saying,

"Behold, a sower went forth to sow. 4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the wayside; and the fowls came and devoured them up. 5 Some fell upon stony places where they had not much earth; and forthwith they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth. 6 And when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 But others fell into good ground and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear."

Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 5:15-16

But the righteous live for evermore;
their reward also is with the Lord, and the care of them is with the Most High.
Therefore shall they receive a glorious kingdom,
and a beautiful crown from the Lord's hand;
for with His right hand shall He cover them,
and with His arm shall He protect them.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 7:22-23

Many will say to Me in that Day, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name, and in Thy name have cast out devils, and in Thy name done many wonderful works?' And then will I profess unto them, `I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.'
