The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
1 Kings 3:4-12
4 And the
king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. A
thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night;
and God said, "Ask what I shall give thee." 6 And Solomon said,
"Thou hast shown unto Thy servant David my father great mercy, according as
he walked before Thee in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart
with Thee; and Thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that Thou hast given
him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 And now, O LORD my God,
Thou hast made Thy servant king instead of David my father. And I am but a
little child; I know not how to go out or come in. 8 And Thy servant is in the
midst of Thy people whom Thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be
numbered nor counted for multitude. 9 Give therefore Thy servant an
understanding heart to judge Thy people, that I may discern between good and
bad; for who is able to judge this Thy so great a people?"
10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this
thing. 11 And God said unto him, "Because thou hast asked this thing, and
hast not asked for thyself long life, neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor
hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding
to discern judgment, 12 behold, I have done according to thy words. Lo, I have
given thee a wise and an understanding heart, so that there was none like thee
before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
Psalm 119:57-72, 127-130
57 Thou art my portion, O LORD;
I have said that I would keep Thy words.
58 I entreated Thy favor with my whole heart;
be merciful unto me according to Thy word.
59 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto
Thy testimonies.
60 I made haste, and delayed not to keep Thy
commandments.
61 The cords of the wicked have robbed me,
but I have not forgotten Thy law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto
Thee,
because of Thy righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all them that fear Thee,
and of them that keep Thy precepts.
64 The earth, O LORD, is full of Thy mercy;
teach me Thy statutes.
65 Thou hast dealt well with Thy servant, O LORD, according to
Thy word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I have believed Thy
commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
but now have I kept Thy word.
68 Thou art good, and doest good;
teach me Thy statutes.
69 The proud have forged a lie against me,
but I will keep Thy precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as fat as grease,
but I delight in Thy law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn
Thy statutes.
72 The law of Thy mouth is better for me than thousands of gold and
silver.
127 Therefore I love Thy commandments above gold,
yea, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I esteem all Thy precepts concerning all things to be
right,
and I hate every false way.
129 Thy testimonies are wonderful;
therefore doth my soul keep them.
130 The entering of Thy words giveth light;
it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Romans 8:26-30
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities; for we know
not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And He that
searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh
intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that
all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the
called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to
be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many
brethren. 30 Moreover, whom He predestined, those He also called; and whom He
called, those He also justified; and whom He justified, those He also glorified.
Words of Worship - Matthew 11:25b
"I thank Thee, O
Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things
from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
Matthew 13:44-52
44 "Again, the
Kingdom of Heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field, which, when a man hath
found, he hideth; and for the joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath,
and buyeth that field.
45 "Again, the
Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls, 46 who,
when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and
bought it.
47 "Again, the
Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered
of every kind, 48 which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down
and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. 49 So shall it be
at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth and sever the wicked from
among the just, 50 and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall
be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
51 Jesus said unto them,
"Have ye
understood all these things?"
They said unto Him, "Yea, Lord." 52
Then said He unto them,
"Therefore every
scribe who is instructed unto the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is
a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and
old."
Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 30:24
Envy and wrath shorten the life, and anxiousness bringeth age before the
time.

"Or what man
is there among you whom, if his son ask for bread, will give him a
stone? Or if he ask for a fish, will give him a serpent? If ye then,
being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much
more shall your Father who is in Heaven give good things to them
that ask Him?
