The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Genesis 22:1-19

1 And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Abraham and said unto him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Behold, here I am." 2 And He said, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of." 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he cleaved the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, "Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand and a knife, and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spoke unto Abraham his father and said, "My father!" And he said, "Here am I, my son." And he said, "Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" 8 And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering." So they went both of them together.

9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I." 12 And He said, "Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from Me." 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh [that is, The LORD will provide]; as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."

15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time 16 and said, "By Myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, 17 in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies. 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed My voice." 19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.

Psalm 115

1 Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory,
for Thy mercy and for Thy truth's sake.

2 Why should the heathen say,
"Where now is their God?"
3 But our God is in the heavens;
He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased.
4 Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of men's hands.
5 They have mouths, but they speak not;
eyes have they, but they see not.
6 They have ears, but they hear not;
noses have they, but they smell not.
7 They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not;
neither speak they through their throat.
8 They that make them are like unto them;
so is everyone that trusteth in them.

9 O Israel, trust thou in the LORD:
He is their help and their shield.
10 O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD:
He is their help and their shield.
11 Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD:
He is their help and their shield.

12 The LORD hath been mindful of us;
He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron.
13 He will bless them that fear the LORD, both small and great.

14 The LORD shall increase you more and more,
you and your children.
15 Ye are blessed by the LORD
who made heaven and earth.
16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's;
but the earth hath He given to the children of men.
17 The dead praise not the LORD,
neither do any that go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore.
Praise the LORD!

Words of Worship - 2 Corinthians 5:19

19 to wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation.

Matthew 9:1-8

1 And He entered into a boat, and passed over and came into His own city. 2 And behold, they brought to Him a man sick with the palsy, lying on a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the one sick with the palsy,

"Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee."

3 And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, "This man blasphemeth." 4 And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said,

"Why think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier: to say, `Thy sins be forgiven thee,' or to say, `Arise and walk'? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins,"--

(then said He to the one sick with palsy)

"Arise, take up thy bed and go unto thine house."

7 And he arose and departed to his house.

8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power unto men.

Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 21:23

Whoso guardeth his mouth and his tongue
keepeth his soul from troubles.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:16-18

"Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head and wash thy face, that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
