The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

1 Kings 19:1-21

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and also how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time." 3 And when he saw that, he arose and went for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers." 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him and said unto him, "Arise and eat." 6 And he looked, and behold, there was a cake baked on the coals and a cruse of water at his head. And he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee." 8 And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 And he came thither unto a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said unto him, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" 10 And he said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword. And I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 11 And He said, "Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice unto him and said, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" 14 And he said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts, because the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword. And I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 15 And the LORD said unto him, "Go, return on thy way to the Wilderness of Damascus. And when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria; 16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy stead. 17 And it shall come to pass that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. 18 Yet I have left Me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him."

19 So he departed from thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee." And he said unto him, "Go back again, for what have I done to thee?" 21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slew them and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

Psalm 16

1 Preserve me, O God,
for in Thee do I put my trust.
2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD,
"Thou art my Lord; my goodness extendeth not to Thee,
3 but to the saints that are on the earth,
and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight."

4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied,
that hasten after another god;
their drink offerings of blood will I not offer,
nor take up their names upon my lips.

5 The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup;
Thou maintainest my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
yea, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I will bless the LORD who hath given me counsel;
my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

8 I have set the LORD always before me;
because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my spirit rejoiceth;
my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 For Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
neither wilt Thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption.
11 Thou wilt show me the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy;
at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Words of Worship - Luke 2:19

But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Luke 2:41-52

41 Now His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the Feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and His mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing Him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances. 45 And when they found Him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 And it came to pass that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw Him they were amazed, and His mother said unto Him, "Son, why hast Thou thus dealt with us? Behold, Thy father and I have sought Thee sorrowing." 49 And He said unto them,

"How is it that ye sought Me? Knew ye not that I must be about My Father's business?"

50 And they understood not the saying which He spoke unto them. 51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them. But His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 25:10

O how great is he that findeth wisdom!
Yet is there none above him that feareth the Lord.

"Take heed to yourselves. If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, `I repent,' thou shalt forgive him." And the apostles said unto the Lord, "Increase our faith."
