The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

1 Kings 19:1-21

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and also how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, "So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time." 3 And when he saw that, he arose and went for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough! Now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers." 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him and said unto him, "Arise and eat." 6 And he looked, and behold, there was a cake baked on the coals and a cruse of water at his head. And he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee." 8 And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 And he came thither unto a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said unto him, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" 10 And he said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword. And I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 11 And He said, "Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice unto him and said, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" 14 And he said, "I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts, because the children of Israel have forsaken Thy covenant, thrown down Thine altars, and slain Thy prophets with the sword. And I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away." 15 And the LORD said unto him, "Go, return on thy way to the Wilderness of Damascus. And when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria; 16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy stead. 17 And it shall come to pass that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. 18 Yet I have left Me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him."

19 So he departed from thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee." And he said unto him, "Go back again, for what have I done to thee?" 21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slew them and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

Psalm 27

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh,
they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army should encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war should rise against me,
even in this will I be confident.

4 One thing have I desired of the LORD;
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in His temple.
5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion;
in the secret places of His tabernacle shall He hide me;He shall set me upon a rock.
6 And then shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me;
therefore I will offer in His tabernacle sacrifices of joy;
I will sing,
yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.

7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me and answer me.
8 When Thou saidst, "Seek ye My face,"
my heart said unto Thee, "Thy face, LORD, will I seek."
9 Hide not Thy face far from me;
put not Thy servant away in anger.
Thou hast been my help; leave me not,
neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
10 When my father and my mother forsake me,
then the LORD will take me up.

11 Teach me Thy way, O LORD,
and lead me in a level path because of mine enemies.
12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies;
for false witnesses have risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.
13 I would have fainted,
unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
14 Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart.
Wait, I say, on the LORD!

Words of Worship - Philippians 2:15d-16a

among whom ye shine as lights in the world, holding forth the Word of Life,

Matthew 5:27-32

27 "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old, `Thou shalt not commit adultery.' 28 But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if thy right eye cause thee to fall, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30 And if thy right hand cause thee to fall, cut it off and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 27:2

As a nail sticketh fast between the joinings of the stones,
so doth sin stick close between buying and selling.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 5:29

And if thy right eye cause thee to fall, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
