The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

2 Kings 2:1-22

1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, "Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel." And Elisha said unto him, "As the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee." So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came forth to Elisha and said unto him, "Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head today?" And he said, "Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace."

4 And Elijah said unto him, "Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho." And he said, "As the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee." So they came to Jericho. 5 And the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said unto him, "Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head today?" And he answered, "Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace."

6 And Elijah said unto him, "Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to the Jordan." And he said, "As the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee." And the two went on. 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood in sight to view afar off; and they two stood by the Jordan. 8 And Elijah took his mantle and wrapped it together and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither so that the two went over on dry ground.

9 And it came to pass, when they had gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee." And Elisha said, "I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me." 10 And he said, "Thou hast asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so." 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and the horsemen thereof!"

And he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters and said, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" And when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither; and Elisha went over.

15 And when the sons of the prophets who were in view at Jericho saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha." And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him. 16 And they said unto him, "Behold now, there are with thy servants fifty strong men. Let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master, lest perhaps the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up and cast him upon some mountain or into some valley." And he said, "Ye shall not send." 17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, "Send." They sent therefore fifty men, and they sought three days but found him not. 18 And when they came again to him (for he tarried at Jericho), he said unto them, "Did I not say unto you, `Go not'?"

19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, "Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth; but the water is nought, and the ground barren." 20 And he said, "Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein." And they brought it to him. 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there and said, "Thus saith the LORD: `I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.'" 22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spoke.

Psalm 31:19-24

19 O how great is Thy goodness which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee,
which Thou hast wrought for them that trust in Thee before the sons of men!
20 Thou shalt hide them in the safety of Thy presence from the pride of man;
Thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the LORD,
for He hath shown me His marvelous kindness in a stronghold city!
22 For I said in my haste, "I am cut off from before Thine eyes!"
Nevertheless Thou heard the voice of my supplications when I cried unto Thee.

23 O love the LORD, all ye His saints!
For the LORD preserveth the faithful, but plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.
24 Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart,
all ye that hope in the LORD.

Words of Worship - John 14:23b

"If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him and make Our abode with him.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-23

1 "Take heed that ye do not your almsgiving before men, to be seen by them; otherwise ye have no reward from your Father who is in Heaven. 2 Therefore when thou givest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. 3 But when thou givest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth, 4 that thine almsgiving may be in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret, Himself shall reward thee openly.

5 "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

16 "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head and wash thy face, 18 that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

19 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

22 "The light of the body is the eye. If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

Words of Wisdom - Isaiah 58:10-11

and if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry
and satisfy the afflicted soul,
then shall thy light rise in obscurity
and thy darkness be as the noonday.
And the LORD shall guide thee continually,
and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones;
and thou shalt be like a watered garden,
and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 5:38-39

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, `An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say unto you that ye resist not evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
