The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Ecclesiasticus 48:1-14

1 Then stood up Elijah the prophet as fire, and his word burned like a lamp.
2 He brought a sore famine upon them, and by his zeal he diminished their number.
3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heaven, and also three times brought down fire.
4 O Elijah, how wast thou honored in thy wondrous deeds! And who may glory like unto thee!--
5 who didst raise up a dead man from death,
and his soul from the place of the dead, by the word of the Most High;
6 who broughtest kings to destruction,
and honorable men from their bed;
7 who heardest the rebuke of the Lord in Sinai,
and in Horeb the judgment of vengeance;
8 who annointedst kings to take revenge,
and prophets to succeed after him;
9 who was taken up in a whirlwind of fire,
and in a chariot of fiery horses;
10 who wast ordained for reproofs in their times,
to pacify the wrath of the Lord's judgment, before it broke forth into fury,
and to turn the heart of the father unto the son,
and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
11 Blessed are they that saw thee, and slept in love;
for we shall surely live.

12 Elijah it was who was covered with a whirlwind,
and Elisha was filled with his spirit;
whilst he lived, he was not moved with the presence of any prince, neither could any bring him into subjection.
13 No word could overcome him,
and after his death his body prophesied.
14 He did wonders in his life,
and at his death were his works marvelous.

Psalm 97

1 The LORD reigneth, let the earth rejoice!
Let the multitude of isles be glad thereof!
2 Clouds and darkness are round about Him;
righteousness and judgment are the habitation of His throne.
3 A fire goeth before Him,
and burneth up His enemies round about.
4 His lightnings enlightened the world;
 the earth saw and trembled.
5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD,
at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6 The heavens declare His righteousness,
and all the people see His glory.
7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols.
Worship Him, all ye gods!

8 Zion heard and was glad,
and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of Thy judgments, O LORD.
9 For Thou, LORD, art high above all the earth;
Thou art exalted far above all gods.

10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil!
He preserveth the souls of His saints; He delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous,
and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous,
and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.

Words of Worship - Romans 8:15b

ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, "Abba! Father!"

Matthew 6:7-15

7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask Him. 9 In this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
10 Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory for ever.
Amen.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 20:29

The glory of young men is their strength,
and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 5:40-42

And if any man will sue thee at the law and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him two. Give to him that asketh thee; and from him that would borrow of thee, turn not thou away.
