The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

2 Kings 17:5-18

5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria and besieged it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

7 For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods. 8 And they walked in the statutes of the heathen whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. 9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built themselves high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city. 10 And they set up for themselves images and Asherah poles in every high hill and under every green tree; 11 and there they burned incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them, and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger. 12 For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, "Ye shall not do this thing." 13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah by all the prophets and by all the seers, saying, "Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets." 14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks like the neck of their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God. 15 And they rejected His statutes and His covenant that He made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He testified against them; and they followed vanity and became vain, and went after the heathen who were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them that they should not do like them. 16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God and made them molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah pole, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. 17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke Him to anger. 18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of His sight. There was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

Psalm 60

1 O God, Thou hast cast Thou hast scattered us,
Thou hast been displeased; O, turn Thyself to us again!
2 Thou hast made the earth to tremble, Thou hast broken it;
heal the breaches thereof, for it shaketh.
3 Thou hast shown Thy people hard things;
Thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.

4 Thou hast given a banner to them that fear Thee,
that it may be displayed because of the truth.
5 That Thy beloved may be delivered,
save with Thy right hand and hear me!

6 God hath spoken in His holiness: "I will rejoice;
I will divide Shechem and portion out the Valley of Succoth.
7 Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the strength of Mine head; Judah is My lawgiver.
8 Moab is My washpot; over Edom will I cast out My shoe;
Philistia, triumph thou because of Me."

9 Who will bring me into the stronghold city?
Who will lead me into Edom?
10 Will not Thou, O God, who hadst cast us off,
and Thou, O God, who didst not go out with our armies?

11 Give us help from trouble,
for vain is the help of man.
12 Through God we shall do valiantly,
for He it is that shall tread down our enemies.

Words of Worship - Hebrews 4:12

For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Matthew 7:1-5

1 "Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, `Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye,' and behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 27:16

Whoso discloseth secrets loseth his credit
and shall never find a friend to his mind.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:3-4

But when thou givest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth, that thine almsgiving may be in secret; and thy Father who seeth in secret, Himself shall reward thee openly.
