The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

2 Kings 24:8-17

8 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother's name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done.

10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants besieged it. 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he and his mother, and his servants and his princes and his officers; and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign. 13 And he carried out from thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, as the LORD had said. 14 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and smiths. None remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land. 15 And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers, and the mighty of the land: those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. 16 And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths, a thousand, all who were strong and apt for war, even these the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon. 17 And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Psalm 79

1 O God, the heathen have come into Thine inheritance;
Thy holy temple have they defiled, they have laid Jerusalem in heaps.
2 The dead bodies of Thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heavens,
the flesh of Thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3 Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem,
and there was none to bury them.
4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors,
a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.

5 How long, LORD? Wilt Thou be angry for ever?
Shall Thy jealousy burn like fire?
6 Pour out Thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known Thee,
and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon Thy name;
7 for they have devoured Jacob
and laid waste his dwelling place.

8 O remember not former iniquities against us;
let Thy tender mercies go speedily before us, for we are brought very low.
9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Thy name;
and deliver us and purge away our sins, for Thy name's sake.
10 Why should the heathen say, "Where is their God?"
Let Him be known among the heathen in our sight by the avenging of the blood of Thy servants which is shed.

11 Let the sighing of the prisoner come before Thee;
according to the greatness of Thy power, preserve Thou those that are appointed to die.
12 And render unto the bosom of our neighbors
sevenfold their reproach wherewith they have reproached Thee, O Lord.
13 So we Thy people and the sheep of Thy pasture, will give Thee thanks for ever;
we will show forth Thy praise to all generations.

Words of Worship - John 14:23b

"If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him and make Our abode with him.

Matthew 7:21-29

21 "Not every one that saith unto Me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he that doeth the will of My Father who is in Heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that Day, `Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name, and in Thy name have cast out devils, and in Thy name done many wonderful works?' 23 And then will I profess unto them, `I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.'

24 "Therefore, whosoever heareth these sayings of Mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock. 25 And the rain descended and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house; and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of Mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; 27 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell, and great was the fall of it."

28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at His doctrine; 29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 27:28

Mockery and reproach are from the proud;
but vengeance, as a lion, shall lie in wait for them.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:16-18

"Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head and wash thy face, that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
