The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Acts 12:1-11

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. 2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (This was during the Days of Unleavened Bread.) 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him, intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison, but prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, that same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains; and the keepers were guarding the door of the prison. 7 And behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison; and he smote Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, "Arise up quickly." And his chains fell off from his hands. 8 And the angel said unto him, "Gird thyself and bind on thy sandals." And so he did. And the angel said unto him, "Cast thy garment about thee and follow me." 9 And he went out and followed him, and knew not whether what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision. 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city, which opened to them of his own accord. And they went out and passed on through one street, and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I know in truth that the Lord hath sent His angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectations of the people of the Jews."

Psalm 34:1-14

1 I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD;
the humble shall hear thereof and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt His name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto Him and were lightened,
and their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him,
and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear Him,
and delivereth them.

8 O taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the man that trusteth in Him!
9 O fear the LORD, ye His saints!
For them that fear Him suffer no want.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger,
but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is he that desireth life,
and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil,
and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.

2 Timothy 4:6-22

6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me on that Day -- and not to me only, but unto all those also who love His appearing.

9 Use diligence to come shortly unto me, 10 for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with thee, for he is profitable to me for the ministry. 12 And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus. 13 The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil; the Lord reward him according to his works. 15 Beware thou also of him, for he hath greatly withstood our words.

16 At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me. I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. 17 Notwithstanding, the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me unto His heavenly Kingdom, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

19 Salute Prisca and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but Trophimus I have left sick at Miletus. 21 Try with diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brethren.

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit. Grace be with you.

Amen.

Words of Worship - Matthew 16:18

And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:13-20

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying,

"Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"

14 And they said, "Some say that Thou art John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15 He said unto them,

"But who say ye that I am?"

16 And Simon Peter answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him,

"Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father who is in Heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven."

20 Then He charged His disciples that they should tell no man that He was Jesus the Christ.

Words of Wisdom - Jeremiah 32:38-40

And they shall be My people, and I will be their God; and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me for ever, for the good of them and of their children after them. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:19-21

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
