The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Genesis 21:1-21

1 And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had spoken. 2 For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac, being eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him. 6 And Sarah said, "God hath made me laugh, so that all who hear will laugh with me." 7 And she said, "Who would have said unto Abraham that Sarah should have given children suck? For I have borne him a son in his old age."

8 And the child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. 9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, mocking. 10 Therefore she said unto Abraham, "Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac." 11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham, "Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman. In all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed."

14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water; and he gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went and sat down apart from him a good way off, as it were, a bowshot; for she said, "Let me not see the death of the child." And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven and said unto her, "What aileth thee, Hagar? Fear not, for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise; lift up the lad and hold him in thine hand, for I will make him a great nation." 19 And God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 20 And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21 And he dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran, and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

Psalm 34:1-14

1 I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD;
the humble shall hear thereof and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt His name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto Him and were lightened,
and their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him,
and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear Him,
and delivereth them.

8 O taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the man that trusteth in Him!
9 O fear the LORD, ye His saints!
For them that fear Him suffer no want.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger,
but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is he that desireth life,
and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil,
and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.

Words of Worship - James 1:18

Of His own will, He begot us by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

Matthew 8:28-34

28 And when He had come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God? Art Thou come hither to torment us before the time?" 30 Now there was a good way off from them a herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the devils besought Him, saying, "If Thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine."
32 And He said to them,

"Go."

And when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine, and behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea and perished in the waters. 33 And those who kept them fled and went their ways into the city, and told everything and what had befallen the ones possessed with the devils. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they besought Him that He would depart out of their borders.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 27:28

Mockery and reproach are from the proud;
but vengeance, as a lion, shall lie in wait for them.

Jesus Speaks Morals & Values - Matthew 6:14-15

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
