The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
1 Kings 17:8-24
8 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, 9 "Arise, get thee to
Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a
widow woman there to sustain thee." 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath.
And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there
gathering sticks; and he called to her and said, "Fetch me, I pray thee, a
little water in a vessel, that I may drink." 11 And as she was going to
fetch it, he called to her and said, "Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of
bread in thine hand." 12 And she said, "As the LORD thy God liveth, I
have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel and a little oil in a cruse.
And behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and
my son, that we may eat it and die." 13 And Elijah said unto her,
"Fear not; go and do as thou hast said, but make me thereof a little cake
first, and bring it unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son. 14 For
thus saith the LORD God of Israel: `The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither
shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the
earth.'" 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah, and she
and he and her house ate for many days. 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not,
neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD which He
spoke by Elijah.
17 And it came to pass after these things that the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore that there was no
breath left in him. 18 And she said unto Elijah, "What have I to do with
thee, O thou man of God? Art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance and
to slay my son?" 19 And he said unto her, "Give me thy son." And
he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft where he abode, and
laid him upon his own bed. 20 And he cried unto the LORD and said, "O LORD
my God, hast Thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by
slaying her son?" 21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times,
and cried unto the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, I pray Thee, let this
child's soul come into him again!" 22 And the LORD heard the voice of
Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 And
Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house,
and delivered him unto his mother; and Elijah said, "See, thy son
liveth." 24 And the woman said to Elijah, "Now by this I know that
thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is
truth."
Psalm 4
1 Hear me when I call, O God of my
righteousness!
Thou hast set me at large when I was in distress;
have mercy upon me,
and hear my prayer.
2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame?
How long will ye love vanity and seek after lies?
3 But know that the LORD hath set
apart him that is godly for Himself;
the LORD will hear when I call unto Him.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not;
commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.
5 Offer the sacrifices of
righteousness,
and put your trust in the LORD.
6 There are many that say, "Who will show us any good?"
LORD, lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us.
7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart,
more than in the time when their corn and wine increased.
8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep;
for Thou LORD only, makest me dwell in safety.
Words of Worship - Matthew 5:16
Let your light so
shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify
your Father who is in Heaven.
Matthew 5:13-16
13 "Ye are the salt of the earth, but if
the salt has lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth
good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 "Ye are the light of the world. A
city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle and
put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that
are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.
Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 19:17
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD,
and that which he hath given, He will repay him again.

nd He said also unto His disciples,
"There was a certain rich man who had a
steward, and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And
he called him and said unto him, `How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an
account of thy stewardship, for thou mayest be no longer steward.' Then the
steward said within himself, `What shall I do? For my lord taketh away from me
the stewardship. I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. I am resolved what to
do, that when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their
houses.' So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said
unto the first, `How much owest thou unto my lord?' And he said, `A hundred
measures of oil.' And he said to him, `Take thy bill, and sit down quickly and
write fifty.' Then said he to another, `And how much owest thou?' And he
said, `A hundred measures of wheat.' And he said unto him, `Take thy bill and
write fourscore.' And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had
done wisely; for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than
the children of light. And I say unto you, make to yourselves friends of the
mammon of unrighteousness, that when ye fail, they may receive you into
everlasting habitations. He that is faithful in that which is least, is
faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least, is unjust also in
much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who
will commit to your trust the true riches? And if ye have not been faithful
in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?
