from the The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons 2 Samuel 7:4-16 4 And it came to pass that night that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, 5 "Go and tell My servant David, `Thus saith the LORD: Shalt thou build Me a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel, spoke I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed My people Israel, saying, "Why build ye not Me a house of cedar?"' 8 Now therefore, so shalt thou say unto My servant David, `Thus saith the LORD of hosts: I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as before, 11 and as since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. "`Also the LORD telleth thee that He will make thee a house. 12 And when thy days be fulfilled and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, who shall proceed out of thy loins, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; 15 but My mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever.'" Romans 4:13-22 13 For the promise that he should be the heir of the world came not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because the law worketh wrath; for where there is no law, there is no transgression. 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be given by grace to the end that the promise might be made sure to all the seed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written: "I have made thee a father of many nations"), in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead and calleth those things which are not, as though they were. 18 Abraham, against all hope, believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, "So shall thy seed be." 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, nor yet the deadness of Sarah's womb. 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully persuaded that what He had promised, He was able also to perform. 22 And therefore "it was imputed to him for righteousness." Matthew 1:16-24 16 and Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way: When His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a just man and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS, for He shall save His people from their sins." 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel" (which being interpreted is, "God with us"). 24 Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife, Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 12:22
