The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

James 1:1-11

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad:
Greetings.

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations, 3 knowing this: that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, never wavering; for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord. 8 A doubleminded man is unstable in all his ways.

9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted, 10 but the rich in that he is made low, because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. 11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat than it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth. So also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

Psalm 119:65-80

65 Thou hast dealt well with Thy servant, O LORD, according to Thy word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I have believed Thy commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
but now have I kept Thy word.
68 Thou art good, and doest good;
teach me Thy statutes.
69 The proud have forged a lie against me,
but I will keep Thy precepts with my whole heart.
70 Their heart is as fat as grease,
but I delight in Thy law.
71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn Thy statutes.
72 The law of Thy mouth is better for me than thousands of gold and silver.

73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me;
give me understanding, that I may learn Thy commandments.
74 They that fear Thee will be glad when they see me,
because I have hoped in Thy word.
75 I know, O LORD, that Thy judgments are right,
and that Thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.
76 Let, I pray Thee, Thy merciful kindness be for my comfort,
according to Thy word unto Thy servant.
77 Let Thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live;
for Thy law is my delight.
78 Let the proud be ashamed, for they dealt perversely with me without cause;
but I will meditate on Thy precepts.
79 Let those that fear Thee turn unto me, and those that have known Thy testimonies.
80 Let my heart be sound in Thy statutes, that I not be ashamed.

Words of Worship - John 14:6b

"I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.

Mark 8:10-13

10 And straightway He entered into a boat with His disciples and came into the region of Dalmanutha. 11 And the Pharisees came forth and began to question with Him, seeking from Him a sign from Heaven, testing Him. 12 And He sighed deeply in His spirit and said,

"Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say unto you, there shall no sign be given unto this generation."

13 And He left them and, entering into the boat again, departed to the other side.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 20:9

There is a sinner that hath good success in evil things,
and there is a gain that turneth to loss.

"Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap, they neither have storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you by taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?
