The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

James 2:14-26

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and hath not works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you say unto them, "Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled," without giving them those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18 Yea, a man may say, "Thou hast faith, and I have works." Show me thy faith apart from thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well. The devils also believe -- and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness"; and he was called the friend of God. 24 Ye see then how by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also, was not Rahab the harlot justified by works when she had received the messengers and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Psalm 112

1 Praise ye the LORD!
Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in His commandments.
2 His seed shall be mighty upon the earth;
the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house,
and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness;
he is gracious and full of compassion and righteous.
5 A good man showeth favor and lendeth;
he will guide his affairs with discretion.
6 Surely he shall not be moved forever;
the righteous shall be held in everlasting remembrance.
7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings;
his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.
8 His heart is established;
he shall not be afraid until he sees his desires upon his enemies.
9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honor.

10 The wicked shall see it and be grieved, he shall gnash with his teeth and melt away;
the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Words of Worship - John 15:15b

...but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard of My Father, I have made known unto you.

Mark 8:34-38

34 And when He had called the people unto Him with His disciples also, He said unto them,

"Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the Gospel's, the same shall save it. 36 For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him also shall the Son of Man be ashamed when He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

Mark 9:1

1 And He said unto them,

"Verily I say unto you, that there are some of them that stand here who shall not taste of death till they have seen the Kingdom of God come with power."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 10:1

Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor;
so doth a little folly in him that hath a reputation for wisdom and honor.

 "Let your loins be girded about and your lights burning; and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord when he will return from the wedding, that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. Blessed are those servants whom the lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants.
