The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

James 3:1-12

1 My brethren, let not many be masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2 For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great and are driven by fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the helmsman pleases. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a wood a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. So is the tongue among our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird and serpent and thing in the sea is tamed, and hath been tamed, by mankind. 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith we bless God, even the Father, and therewith we curse men, who are made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth from the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries, or a vine figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

Psalm 12

1 Help, LORD, for the godly man ceaseth;
for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbor;
with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips,
and the tongue that speaketh proud things,
4 who have said, "With our tongue, we will prevail; our lips are our own;
who is lord over us?"

5 "For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy,
now will I arise," saith the LORD; "I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him."

6 The words of the LORD are pure words,
as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD; Thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

Words of Worship - Mark 9:7

And there was a cloud that overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "THIS IS MY BELOVED SON: HEAR HIM!"

Mark 9:2-13

2 And after six days Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and led them up onto a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. 3 And His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, such as no fuller on earth could whiten them. 4 And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter spoke and said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles: one for Thee, one for Moses, and one for Elijah--" 6 for he knew not what to say, for they were sore afraid. 7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "THIS IS MY BELOVED SON: HEAR HIM!" 8 And suddenly when they had looked round about, they saw no man anymore, save Jesus only with them.

9 And as they came down from the mountain, He charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of Man were risen from the dead. 10 And they kept that saying to themselves, questioning one another what "rising from the dead" should mean. 11 And they asked Him, saying, "Why say the scribes that first Elijah must come?" 12 And He answered and told them,

"Elijah verily cometh first and restoreth all things, and how it is written of the Son of Man that He must suffer many things and be set at nought. 13 But I say unto you that Elijah has indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they pleased, as it is written of him."

Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 17:5

Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker,
and he that is glad at calamities shall not go unpunished.

And this know, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not have suffered his house to be broken into.
