The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

James 4:11-17

11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law and judgeth the law. But if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy. Who art thou that judgest another?

13 Come now, ye that say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a city and continue there a year, and buy and sell and get gain"; 14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 Instead ye ought to say, "If the Lord will, we shall live and do this or that." 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings. All such rejoicing is evil. 17 Therefore to him that knoweth how to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Psalm 49

1 Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world,
2 both low and high, rich and poor together.
3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom,
and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
4 I will incline mine ear to a parable;
I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

5 Why should I fear in the days of evil,
when the iniquity at my heels shall compass me about?
6 They that trust in their wealth
and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches,
7 none of them can by any means redeem his brother,
nor give to God a ransom for him
8 (for the redemption of their soul is precious,
and it ceaseth for ever),
9 that they should still live for ever,
and not see corruption.

10 For he seeth that wise men die;
likewise the fool and the brutish person perish and leave their wealth to others.
11 Their inward thought is that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations;
they call their lands after their own names.
12 Nevertheless man, though he be in honor, abideth not;
he is like the beasts that perish.
13 This their way is their folly,
yet their posterity approve their sayings.

14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave;
death shall feed on them,
and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning,
and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave away from their dwelling.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
for He shall receive me.

16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich,
when the glory of his house is increased.
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away;
his glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul
(and men will praise thee when thou doest well for thyself),
19 he shall go to the generation of his fathers;
they shall never see light.

20 Man, though he is in honor but understandeth not,
is like the beasts that perish.

Words of Worship - John 14:6

"I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.

Mark 9:38-41

38 And John answered Him, saying, "Master, we saw one casting out devils in Thy name, but he followeth us not, so we forbad him because he followeth not us." 39 But Jesus said,

"Forbid him not, for there is no man who shall do a miracle in My name that can lightly speak evil of Me. 40 For he that is not against us is on our side. 41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 21:13

The knowledge of a wise man shall abound like a flood,
and his counsel is like a pure fountain of life.

"When thou art bidden by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest place, lest a more honorable man than thou be bidden by him, and he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, `Give this man thy place,' and thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place, that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, `Friend, go up higher.' Then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
