The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

James 5:1-6

1 Come now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted and your garments motheaten. 3 Your gold and silver are cankered, and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. 4 Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped your fields, which you kept back by fraud, crieth; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton. Ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just, and he doth not resist you.

Psalm 49:13-19

13 This their way is their folly,
yet their posterity approve their sayings.

14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave;
death shall feed on them,
and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning,
and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave away from their dwelling.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
for He shall receive me.

16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich,
when the glory of his house is increased.
17 For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away;
his glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul
(and men will praise thee when thou doest well for thyself),
19 he shall go to the generation of his fathers;
they shall never see light.

Words of Worship - 1 Thessalonians 2:13

For this cause also we thank God without ceasing: because when ye received the Word of God, which ye heard from us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the Word of God, which also worketh effectually in you that believe.

Mark 9:41-50

41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

42 And whosoever shall cause one of these little ones that believe in Me to fall, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea. 43 And if thy hand cause thee to fall, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter into life maimed than, having two hands, to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched,

44 where
`their worm dieth not,
and the fire is not quenched.'

45 And if thy foot cause thee to fall, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter halt into life than, having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched, 46 where
`their worm dieth not,
and the fire is not quenched.'
47 And if thine eye cause thee to fall, pluck it out. It is better for thee to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire, 48 where
`their worm dieth not,
and the fire is not quenched.'
49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost his saltness, with what will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 10:12-13

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious,
but the lips of a fool will swallow himself up;
the beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness,
and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."
