The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

James 5:12-20

12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by earth, nor by any other oath; but let your "Yea" be yea, and your "Nay" be nay, lest ye fall into condemnation.

13 Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any merry? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. And if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 17 Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are. And he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it rained not on the earth for the space of three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit.

19 Brethren, if any of you err from the truth and one convert him, 20 let him know that he who converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

Psalm 141

1 LORD, I cry unto Thee! Make haste unto me!
Give ear unto my voice when I cry unto Thee.
2 Let my prayer be set before Thee as incense,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth;
keep the door of my lips.
4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men that work iniquity;
and let me not eat of their dainties.

5 Let the righteous smite me: it shall be a kindness.
And let him reprove me: it shall be as an excellent oil,
which shall not break my head;
for yet my prayer shall be with them in their calamities.
6 When their judges are overthrown onto stony places,
they shall hear my words, for they are sweet.

7 Our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth,
as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.
8 But mine eyes are unto Thee, O GOD the Lord;
in Thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.
9 Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the traps of the workers of iniquity.
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, whilst I thereupon escape.

Words of Worship - Matthew 11:25

"I thank Thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

Mark 10:13-16

13 And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them; and His disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased and said unto them,

"Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein."

16 And He took them up in His arms, put His hands upon them, and blessed them.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 22:1

A slothful man is compared to a filthy stone,
and every one will hiss him out to his disgrace.

"A certain man made a great supper and bade many. And he sent his servant at suppertime to say to them that were bidden, `Come, for all things are now ready.' And they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said unto him, `I have bought a piece of ground, and I need to go and see it. I pray thee have me excused.' And another said, `I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to test them. I pray thee have me excused.' And another said, `I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' So that servant came and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, `Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and the maimed and the halt and the blind.' And the servant said, `Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.' And the lord said unto the servant, `Go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you that none of those men who were bidden shall taste of my supper.'"
