The Lectionary According to the Christian Seasons

Deuteronomy 8

1 "All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers. 2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments or not. 3 And He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know, that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. 4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell these forty years. 5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart that as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee. 6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God to walk in His ways and to fear Him. 7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills, 8 a land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive oil, and honey, 9 a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness. Thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. 10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.

11 "Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God in not keeping His commandments and His judgments and His statutes which I command thee this day, 12 lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses and dwelt therein, 13 and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied, 14 then thine heart be lifted up and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, 15 who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents and scorpions and drought, where there was no water, who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint, 16 who fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not, that He might humble thee and that He might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; 17 and thou say in thine heart, `My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.' 18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God; for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day. 19 And it shall be, if thou at all forget the LORD thy God and walk after other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. 20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish, because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

Psalm 147

1 Praise ye the LORD! For it is good to sing praises unto our God;
for it is pleasant, and praise is comely.

2 The LORD doth build up Jerusalem;
He gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.
3 He healeth the broken in heart,
and bindeth up their wounds.
4 He telleth the number of the stars;
He calleth them all by their names.
5 Great is our Lord, and of great power;
His understanding is infinite.
6 The LORD lifteth up the meek;
He casteth the wicked down to the ground.

7 Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving;
sing praise upon the harp unto our God,
8 who covereth the heavens with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth,
who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.
9 He giveth to the beast his food
and to the young ravens which cry.
10 He delighteth not in the strength of the horse;
He taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.
11 The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear Him,
in those that hope in His mercy.

12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem!
Praise thy God, O Zion!
13 For He hath strengthened the bars of thy gates;
He hath blessed thy children within thee.
14 He maketh peace in thy borders,
and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat.
15 He sendeth forth His commandment upon the earth;
His word runneth very swiftly.
16 He giveth snow like wool;
He scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes;
17 He casteth forth His ice like morsels;
who can stand before His cold?
18 He sendeth out His word, and melteth them;
He causeth His wind to blow, and the waters flow.
19 He showeth His word unto Jacob,
His statutes and His judgments unto Israel.
20 He hath not dealt so with any nation; and as for His judgments, they have not known them.
Praise ye the LORD!

1 Corinthians 10:16-17

16 The cup of blessing which we bless: is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break: is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, being many, are one bread and one body, for we are all partakers of that one Bread.

John 6:51-58

 51 I am the living Bread which came down from Heaven. If any man eat of this Bread, he shall live for ever; and the Bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Then Jesus said unto them,

"Verily, verily I say unto you, unless ye eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, ye have no life in you. 54 Whoso eateth My flesh and drinketh My blood hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the Last Day. 55 For My flesh is meat indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. 56 He that eateth My flesh and drinketh My blood dwelleth in Me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father, so he that eateth Me, even he shall live by Me. 58 This is that Bread which came down from Heaven, not as your fathers ate manna and are dead; he that eateth of this Bread shall live for ever."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 10:18

By much slothfulness the building decayeth,
and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first and
counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest it may happen,
after he hath laid the foundation and is not able to finish it, all who behold it
begin to mock him, saying, `This man began to build and was not able to
finish.'
